Ray entered the Vancouver Police Department as a custodial guard in 1966 and became a Police Constable in 1968.  Over the next 30 years, he worked his way up to become the Department's Top Cop.

Chief Constable Ray Canuel retired on July 1st, 1997 and looked forward to a long and healthy retirement.  He was diagnosed three months later with liver cancer.

Sadly, Ray passed away on January 14th, 1998.

The Chief R.J. Canuel Scholarship was established in 1998, being the only one of it's kind in Canada, to be named after a Chief Of Police.  Ray had been a Youth Officer at one point in his career and was also a big supporter of education.  He wanted to ensure that all students had the chance to continue their post secondary schooling.  This scholarship was set up to assist any student in Canada, who wishes to continue their education to a University level.

Each year the Chief R.J. Canuel Memorial Golf Tournament raises funds for Ray's scholarship and other worthwhile endeavors.  This year's tournament will also be raising funds for The Law Enforcement Tourch Run For B.C. Special Olympics.
